ALOR STAR: Seorang murid Tahun Enam cedera di muka dan beberapa bahagian badan, dipercayai menjadi mangsa penderaan ahli keluarganya sejak lima bulan lalu.
Izzudin Syah Mohd Norul Sani, 12, mendakwa sering dipukul dan pernah dibiarkan tidak makan beberapa hari kerana mahu pulang semula ke pangkuan datuk dan neneknya di Felda Lubuk Merbau, Kuala Nerang.
Izzudin tinggal dengan ibu kandungnya sejak dibawa tinggal di Langkawi pada November tahun lalu, sebelum mereka berpindah ke Butterworth tidak lama kemudian.
Mangsa yang ditemani datuknya, Abdul Karim Arshad, 79, turut mendakwa sering dipukul menggunakan penyangkut pakaian, selain dijentik dahinya, jika tidak patuh arahan.
Abdul Karim berkata, cucunya tinggal bersama beliau dan isteri sejak berusia sebulan apabila anak lelaki dan bekas menantunya mengambil keputusan untuk bercerai.
"Pada November lalu, bekas menantu saya datang ke rumah untuk mengambil Izzudin dan berjanji memulangkannya selepas cuti sekolah tetapi dia tidak berbuat demikian.
"Sepanjang tempoh lima bulan itu, saya cuba menghubungi bekas menantu saya melalui telefon bimbit tetapi telefon bimbit itu dimatikan," katanya.
Beliau dan isterinya, Saadiah Md Salleh, 63, bagaimanapun terkejut apabila Izzudin tiba-tiba menghubungi mereka, Ahad lalu dan mengatakan dia dalam perjalanan pulang ke Alor Star.
"Saya hampir menangis apabila melihat Izzudin yang baru saja turun dari bas kira-kira jam 3.40 petang di Stesen Bas Shahab Perdana terus meluru mendapatkan kami berdua," katanya.
Abdul Karim berkata, beliau dan isteri terkejut apabila mendapati terdapat kesan lebam di tangan dan muka Izzudin sehingga menyebabkan mereka mengesyaki cucunya menjadi mangsa penderaan.
Berikutan itu, beliau menghantar mangsa ke Hospital Kuala Nerang untuk pemeriksaan, sebelum membuat laporan di Ibu Pejabat Polis Daerah Padang Terap.
Sementara itu, Ketua Polis Daerah Padang Terap, Deputi Superintendan Mohd Hamzan Darus, mengesahkan menerima laporan, tetapi belum ada tangkapan dibuat.

2007 05: Kerastase anjur kempen lindungi kanak-kanak

KASIHAN melihat nasib kanak-kanak terbiar tidak sekadar lahir daripada hati, sebaliknya sedikit sumbangan wang ringgit yang akhirnya mampu menimbun menerusi kerja amal dilakukan mungkin membantu mereka meneruskan kehidupan.
Dalam usaha ini jenama pemeliharaan rambut daripada Paris, Kerastase memanjangkan langkah itu dengan sasaran melindungi dan memelihara kanak-kanak seluruh dunia khususnya Malaysia.
Melalui kempen berkenaan Kerastase memperkenalkan beg edisi terhad untuk menyampaikan pesanan menjaga dan melindungi kanak-kanak. Beg berharga RM15 itu boleh didapati di salon Kerastase dan 50 peratus daripada jumlah berkenaan akan disumbangkan kepada Tabung Kanak-kanak Pertubuhan Bangsa Bersatu (Unicef).
Beg comel berwarna hitam itu menggambarkan kanak-kanak bersama pesanan melindungi kanak-kanak dan ia dihasilkan dengan kerjasama pereka tersohor, Zang Toi, Donna Chew dan Beatrice Looi.
Program bermula 1 Februari hingga 15 April lepas berjaya mengumpul RM30,000 pada majlis penyampaian replika cek, baru-baru ini. Ia disampaikan Pengurus Besar Bahagian Produk Profesional L’Oreal, Matthieu Juery kepada Pegawai Bertugas dan Koordinator Program Unicef Malaysia, Dr Rudi Luchmann.
Juery berkata, rakan salon jenama itu komited terbabit dalam kempen memungut derma dan sebarkan pesanan perlindungan kanak-kanak daripada keganasan.“Kami tidak sekadar memelihara kesihatan rambut sebaliknya kanak-kanak yang bernasib malang,” katanya.
Sementara itu, Dr Rudi Luchmann, berkata Kementerian Pembangunan Wanita, Keluarga dan Masyarakat pada 2005 melaporkan seramai 1,800 penderaan kanak-kanak dilaporkan dengan purata lima kes laporan setiap hari. Tetapi, ia bagaikan sebahagian kecil daripada kisah sebenar kerana realitinya masih banyak kes yang tidak dilaporkan dan hanya kes ekstrem yang memerlukan kemasukan ke hospital atau membabitkan kematian dilaporkan.
Katanya, cabaran mengakhiri keganasan terhadap kanak-kanak memerlukan pelbagai pendekatan dan strategi yang mana ia membabitkan 4P iaitu protect, prevention, prosecution dan participation atau perlindungan; pencegahan, membanteras jenayah dan pembabitan kanak-kanak.
“Pesanan utama adalah tiada keganasan terhadap kanak-kanak boleh dimaafkan walau dalam apa bentuk sekali pun sama ada dikaitkan dengan tradisi dan disiplin. Kajian Setiausaha Agung Bangsa Bersatu, terhadap keganasan kanak-kanak yang dilancarkan pada 2006 melihat masih banyak cara boleh dilakukan untuk hentikan keganasan berkenaan.
“Laporan menegaskan perlunya pencegahan dalam segala bentuk keganasan dan kepentingan pendekatan koordinasi kebangsaan bagi menangani masalah ini tidak lain bukan ialah selalu mempromosi dan menghormatinya.
“Kami berbangga bekerjasama dengan L’oreal untuk produk perlindungan Kerastase dan kempen perlindungan Kerastase malah kami turut berterima kasih kepada pereka yang mengambil bahagian,” katanya. Unicef bekerjasama dengan 163 negara untuk membantu kanak-kanak membina potensi mereka sepenuhnya. Mereka memperjuangkan hak kanak-kanak melalui sumbangan kemanusiaan termasuk program yang membantu mereka terus hidup sehingga ke alam dewasa dan itulah antara bermulanya program ini.

Dianggarkan 100,000 kanak-kanak seluruh dunia menjadi mangsa eksploitasi, penderaan dan keganasan setiap tahun. Mereka tidak memiliki rumah dan tercicir daripada sekolah selain dipaksa mengikuti ketenteraan. Malah, tidak keterlaluan dikatakan menjadi mangsa seksual dalam dunia pelacuran dan perhambaan dalam apa jua bentuk sekali pun.
Keganasan terhadap kanak-kanak termasuklah keganasan secara fizikal, percakapan, psikologikal, diskriminasi dan tidak diendahkan. Tidak kira daripada segi fizikal, percakapan dan seksual di rumah atau buli di sekolah, juga penderaan dan kekejaman di dalam institusi hinggalah kumpulan jalanan di mana kanak-kanak bermain atau bekerja.
Di Malaysia, statistik daripada Kementerian Pembangunan Wanita, Keluarga dan Masyarakat melaporkan seramai 1,656 kes penderaan kanak-kanak dilaporkan pada 2004 yang mana keganasan seksual mencatatkan jumlah yang paling tinggi. Laporan pihak ketiga mendedahkan kebimbangan jumlah kanak-kanak dan wanita muda terperangkap di dalam eksploitasi, dan diperdagangkan setiap tahun untuk menjadi pekerja seks atau buruh di Malaysia.
Berdasarkan pertubuhan bukan kerajaan (NGO) tempatan dan ahli akademi, Malaysia menjadi sumber transit, dan negara distinasi untuk perdagangan wanita dan kanak-kanak. Melindungi penderaan kanak-kanak bukan saja membabitkan hak kanak-kanak, sebaliknya kelangsungan hidup dan kesihatan kanak-kanak. Sementelah, sebahagian besar penderaan dan eksploitasi menderita tanpa terlihat dek mata kasar, impak pengumpulan penderaan ini tidak terlihat. Ia hanya nampak menerusi tidak ada pendidikan, tidak sihat dan masyarakat sekitar, kebanyakan mereka tidak dilindungi ketika kecil.
Wakil Khas Unicef untuk Malaysia dan Wakil Khas Unicef Brunei dan Singapura, Gaye Philips dilaporkan berkata, keganasan terhadap kanak-kanak adalah keganasan terhadap hak kemanusiaan, “Ia tidak boleh diterima dan tidak akan dikasihani walau dalam apa bentuk alasan termasuk disiplin, dan kebudayaan tradisi,”.

2007 05: Two accused were hanging from the ceiling, court told

JOHOR BARU: A security guard, who is accused of strangling his three children to death, was hanging motionless when a neighbour found him on that fateful day nearly three years ago.
"I saw the man and his 16-year-old daughter hanging from the ceiling of a room upstairs while three other children were lying motionless on the floor," A. Vasudevan told the High Court yesterday.
Deputy public prosecutor Shahri- zal Shaari had asked him to describe what he saw at the security guard’s house on Nov 20, 2004.
"As the girl was still standing on a chair with the cloth noose wrapped around her lower jaw, I went to help her first."
Vasudevan said he managed to free the girl and went to help the man, but found that the noose was too tight.
He then rushed to get a knife to cut the rope.
"When I cut it, the man fell to the ground and was unconscious for about two minutes."
Vasudevan was testifying at the trial of the 47-year-old security guard, who is jointly charged with his 16-year-old daughter, of murdering his three children aged 6, 5 and 3, at their home in Kulai between 10.30am and 3.30pm on Nov 20, 2004.
Vasudevan said when he questioned the 16-year-old girl about the three children, she told him that they were all dead.
He then checked the children’s bodies to confirm what she had told him.
He left the house and lodged a report at the Kulai police station.
Cross-examined by the security guard’s defence counsel, K.S. Sega- ran, Vasudevan said the 16-year-old accused did not suffer any injuries as the noose around her neck was quite loose.
Earlier, the caretaker of a private welfare home in Kulai testified that the security guard’s wife had sought shelter at the home on Nov 7.
L. Vishnu, 36, said the woman told him that she had left her home voluntarily as she and her husband were constantly having misunderstandings.
He said at 6.30pm on Nov 20, he accompanied the woman to the Kulai police station to lodge a report and to bring her children to live with her at the home.
"It was while we were there that we found out that her three children were dead," he said.
The 16-year-old accused is represented by S. Gunapati while Segaran is assisted by Bernard George. Hearing before Justice Datuk Jeffrey Tan continues.

JOHOR BARU: A 12-year-old girl held down her three siblings while her father allegedly strangled them with a piece of rope.
This was revealed at the High Court yesterday by the seventh prosecution witness, A. Vasudevan, a neighbour who stumbled on the gruesome scene in a house in Kulai in 2004.
The girl, now 16, allegedly told Vasudevan that she was asked by the father to hold the children’s feet while he strangled them.Vasudevan was asked by DPP Shahrizal Shaari to elaborate on his testimony on Tuesday that the girl told him her father ordered the killing of the three children.
The security guard and his daughter are charged with murdering the three children aged six, five and three at their home in Kulai between 10.30am and 3.30pm on Nov 20, 2004.
The security guard’s counsel, K.S. Segaran, in his cross examination of the witness, told the court that Vasudevan could be lying about the girl’s statement."I put it to you that you have discussed this matter with others and have been tutored to say this," Segaran said.
"Yesterday, you twice said that the girl told you that her father ordered the killing of the children but you did not elaborate."Vasudevan, however, maintained that he was telling the truth.
Segaran and his assistant, Bernard George, had earlier objected to Shahrizal’s request that he be allowed to continue with the examination-in-chief of Vasudevan.
Judge Datuk Jeffrey Tan, however, allowed Shahrizal’s application.
Segaran pointed out to the court that Vasudevan could not have spoken to the girl as he had testified earlier that he rushed to lodge a police report after seeing the bodies.
"He simply would not have had the time to question the girl," said Segaran. Another witness, a chemist who was formerly attached to the forensic division of the Sultanah Aminah Hospital, told the court he examined the bloodstains on a blouse which was handed to him by the police.
The witness, Soupy Daud, said the bloodstains on the blouse were type O.
Soupy said there were no bloodstains on two nylon ropes which were given to him for testing, adding that tests on blood samples from the three dead children showed no traces of poison or drugs.
The girl is represented by S. Gunapati. Hearing continues.

SHAH ALAM: Her innocence and trusting nature caused her to endure an hour of hell at the hands of a sex predator.
The 11-year-old schoolgirl believed the man when he said he was a policeman. He wanted directions and the girl readily got into his car to show him where a shop was located.The culprit, however, drove her to a car park in Sungai Buloh, tied her up with her headscarf, taped her mouth and raped her in the car.
When he was finished, he threw her out of the car before driving away.The bleeding, traumatised girl was spotted by a passer-by who contacted her uncle after getting the telephone number from her.
The Year Five student is now recuperating at the University Malaya Medical Centre. The girl, who is the younger of two siblings, is also being counselled. The incident occurred about 11.30am on Monday at a flat in Jinjang where the victim had just left her home for school.
She was approached on the ground floor by a man in his 20s who identified himself as a policeman.
Selangor deputy CID chief ACP Chee Cheng Wan confirmed the incident and advised parents to educate their children, especially those below the age of 12, on the dangers of being too trusting of strangers.
"There are rapists on the prowl and children should be supervised at all times. If this cannot be done, then parents must ensure that they move around in groups. "They should be taught to be wary of strangers, especially those who claim to be lost or need directions.
"Chee also advised parents to tell their children that policemen cannot order children to follow them"This is not normal procedure. "Policemen do not usually approach children, unless the latter approaches them."

She was approached on the ground floor by a man in his 20s who identified himself as a policeman.
Selangor deputy CID chief ACP Chee Cheng Wan confirmed the incident and advised parents to educate their children, especially those below the age of 12, on the dangers of being too trusting of strangers.
"There are rapists on the prowl and children should be supervised at all times. If this cannot be done, then parents must ensure that they move around in groups. "They should be taught to be wary of strangers, especially those who claim to be lost or need directions.
"Chee also advised parents to tell their children that policemen cannot order children to follow them"This is not normal procedure. "Policemen do not usually approach children, unless the latter approaches them."

KLANG: Two underage sisters will never forget March 29, a date that has been seared into their memory for life.
Their ordeal began at 8.30pm that night when they were abducted outside their home here by several men and taken on a terror ride that changed their lives forever.
They were taken to a double-storey house here and raped by their captors.The next morning, the secondary students were forced into prostitution.
For the next 45 days, they had sex with scores of customers at all hours of the day. They could not escape as they were under the watchful eyes of their kidnappers.Their chance to flee came on Friday when their captors went out, leaving them alone in the house.
It is understood that the sisters opened the door and walked out to freedom — but they did not know where they were.
So, they hid in bushes near the house, waiting for cars to come by. A passer-by discovered them the next morning and sent them to the district police headquarters where their statements were recorded.
Police then sent them to the Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital for a medical examination.

SHAH ALAM: A suspect arrested for an abduction-cum-murder case has been fingered as one of the suspects linked to the abduction and rape of two sisters.
The sisters had been abducted by a group of men on March 29 while out on a shopping trip.They were taken to a double-storey house where about 10 men took turns raping them.
Between March 29 and May 11, the girls were confined to a room and raped almost daily by their captors.
Last Friday, the sisters escaped from their "prison" and spent the night hiding in the bushes.
On Saturday, a passer-by discovered them and sent them to the Klang police headquarters.
They were then sent for a medical examination at the Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital in Klang.
Police now believe that one of those who abducted and raped the sisters is the suspect currently in custody. He was nabbed last week in connection with the earlier abduction-cum-murder case.
In that case, photographer and wedding planner V. Netyanathan and his girlfriend were abducted by a group of men in Banting on April 26.
The woman was believed to have been gang-raped and released the following day, after which she lodged a police report.
Police rounded up several men and one of those nabbed was the suspect, who is now believed to be linked to the sisters’ case.
On May 2, Netyanathan’s body was discovered in Taman Sungai Kapar Indah.
It is believed that the 29-year-old victim was murdered by the group for refusing to disclose the whereabouts of a friend.
A total of six suspects, including a woman, were arrested to facilitate investigations. One of the suspects subsequently led police to the location of the body.

ALOR STAR: A 40-year-old woman and her 13-year-old son who were kidnapped here last week were released in Kuala Lumpur early yesterday.
It is learnt that the woman’s husband, a prominent developer in Kedah, had paid part of the ransom money demanded for their release.
Police have yet to arrest the four suspects who allegedly kidnapped the mother and son at gunpoint at a music school about 8pm last Wednesday.
According to witnesses, four masked men forced the woman and boy into a car and sped off.

2007 05: Five held over robbery, rape

Batu Gajah OCPD Asst Comm Najib Mohamad said the suspects, aged between 16 and 25 years old, were picked up in Menglembu, Jelapang, Kampar and Tronoh between 2.45am and 5.35am yesterday.
“Police recovered a parang and glove, believed to have been used during the robbery, among some bushes in Batu Gajah,” he said.
The suspects have been remanded for seven days to assist in investigations, he said.
It was reported that the robbers had broken into the woman’s house in Taman Medan Bali Mas at 3am on Monday.
Before escaping with the victim’s personal belongings, one of the robbers raped her.

KUALA LUMPUR: A lorry driver has admitted to committing incest with his two underage stepdaughters and forcing them to perform oral sex on him.
The 40-year-old man, who lives in Cheras, pleaded guilty to raping his 14-year-old stepdaughter around 10.30pm in the middle of 2005 and between 9pm and 9.30pm in December last year.
He admitted that he had forced her to perform oral sex on him on both occasions.
The lorry driver also pleaded guilty to raping his elder stepdaughter, who is 15, around 8.30pm in early January last year and around 3.30pm in early April this year.
In addition, he admitted that he had forced her to perform oral sex once.
The lorry driver calmly admitted to the offences after the interpreter read the charges to him.
A conviction for incest and oral sex, or carnal intercourse against the order of nature as defined under the Penal Code, is punishable with a maximum jail term of up to 20 years and whipping. In addition, the minimum jail sentence for incest is six years.
Sessions Court judge Datin Anita Harun fixed Friday for sentencing and denied bail to the accused.

Siti Asiah dakwa dicerai selepas lahirkan Shahira
LANGKAWI: Seorang suri rumah, Siti Asiah Meson, mendakwa Naziratul Shahira Mohd Azmi Prem Kumar, tiga, kanak-kanak yang ditemui di atas peti sejuk seorang diri dengan kedua-dua kaki terikat di dalam rumah sewa ibu tirinya di Pulau Pinang, pada 18 April lalu, adalah anaknya.
Sehubungan itu, Siti Asiah, 36, berkata beliau akan melakukan apa saja bagi membolehkannya mendapat hak penjagaan ke atas kanak-kanak berkenaan yang didakwanya hasil perkongsian hidup dengan bekas suaminya, Mohd Azmi Prem Kumar.
"Saya bercerai dengan Mohd Azmi kira-kira tiga tahun lalu dan ketika itu saya masih dalam pantang selepas melahirkan Naziratul Shahira. Sejak itu kami dua beranak tidak pernah bertemu dan terputus hubungan.
"Sepanjang tempoh itu saya diugut dan diperlakukan secara kasar termasuk beberapa kali ditampar apabila bertanyakan perkembangan Naziratul," katanya ketika ditemui di sini, semalam.
Siti Asiah berkata, setakat ini beliau membuat tiga laporan polis mengenai ugutan yang diterimanya termasuk yang terakhir pada 30 April lalu di Balai Polis Seberang Prai.
Selain Naziratul Shahira, katanya, beliau turut mempunyai seorang lagi anak lelaki, Mohd Ashwan, 5, hasil perkongsian hidup dengan Mohd Azmi, yang juga tidak diketahui khabar beritanya sejak tiga tahun lalu.
"Saya bersyukur Naziratul Shahira masih hidup. Itu pun selepas terlihat namanya dalam akhbar pada 27 April lalu apabila kes membabitkannya disebut di Mahkamah Majistret Georgetown, sehari sebelumnya.
"Laporan itu menyebut seorang peniaga pasar malam, Muhamad Ferdaus Ahmad Jalaludeen, 22, mengaku bersalah atas tuduhan mendera Naziratul Shahira," katanya kelihatan sebak sepanjang pertemuan itu.
"Pelbagai cara sudah dilakukan termasuk menemui Jabatan Kebajikan Masyarakat (JKM) tetapi semuanya menemui jalan buntu. Malah pihak JKM lebih berminat menyerahkan hak penjagaan Naziratul Shahira kepada bekas isteri pertama Mohd Azmi," katanya.
Kes membabitkan Naziratul Shahira mendapat tumpuan media apabila kanak-kanak itu ditemui atas peti sejuk seorang diri dengan kedua-dua kaki terikat di Flet Sri Wonder, Jalan Lintang, Sungai Pinang kira-kira jam 8 malam, 18 April lalu.

HUMAN Rights Commissioner Datuk S. Sivasubramaniam said the increase in the number of crimes affecting Indian women in the country was worrying.
There have been many incidents of kidnapping of teenage girls, and rape and sexual assaults involving Indian women, Malaysia Nanban quoted him as saying.
He said the main reason for the crimes was the irresponsibility of parents who were not interested in the welfare of their children. He urged the parents concerned to lodge police reports.
Sivasubramaniam said that if the police delayed in taking action, then this should be reported too.
He urged Indian community organisations, political parties and NGOs to come together and think of ways to resolve the problem.
