The Star online. News. Nation. Wednesday July 11, 2007
THE Government has set up a special committee to tackle the issue of illegal moneylenders, the Tamil Nesan reported yesterday.
Set up on Dec 28 last year, the aim of the committee was to look for ways to prevent borrowers from being harassed, said parliamentary secretary for Housing and Local Government ministry Datuk Dr. S. Subramaniam in reply to a question raised in Parliament on Monday.
He said that the committee would take legal action against illegal moneylenders, create awareness among the public to dissuade them from going to illegal moneylenders and show them the correct way of obtaining loans. He said that those found to be involved in illegal money-lending could be fined RM10,000 or jailed for a year.
Deputy Education Minister Datuk Noh Omar said representatives of Parent-Teacher Associ-ations might be allowed to sit on school disciplinary boards in an effort to check problems of indiscipline among students, the Malaysia Nanban reported.
