2007 07: Murder victim’s dad turns to MPs

The Star Online. News. Nation. Monday July 16, 2007

BUKIT MERTAJAM: Carrying a thick file of letters, newspaper clippings and photographs of his murdered nine-year-old daughter, lorry driver Ahmad Dasuki Mohd Noor came to the Parliamentary Caucus on Human Rights and Good Governance meeting here with a query which moved the panel.

“How long more do I have to wait for justice?” he asked the six-member panel about his daughter Siti Syazwani’s fate. The girl was raped and murdered in Taman Rhu, Sungai Petani, in 2004.

“There is still no trial date fixed after so long,” lamented Ahmad Dasuki.

He was among 300 people who packed the SM Jit Sin (Private) hall here where the caucus, chaired by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz, was held.

Ahmad Dasuki did not let go of the opportunity to raise his grouses with the panel.

“The police claimed they solved the case within 24 hours after it happened. But they later released the Indonesian suspect because the DNA did not match.

“Nothing happened until I met the Prime Minister last year to seek his help. Now another suspect has been caught but there is still no trial,” he added.

Ahmad later passed over a stack of documents to Nazri, who pledged to submit them to the relevant authorities.

Security was the main issue brought up at the hearing, with many questioning the increasing number of rapes, snatch thefts, burglaries and armed robberies, and the lack of police presence on the streets.

Summing things up, Nazri told the audience that MPs would highlight their grievances in Parliament.

Opposition Leader Lim Kit Siang, who was among those in the panel, urged the police to take heed and pay greater attention to reducing the crime rate.
