The Star online. Metro. North. Thursday July 5, 2007
PENANG: A magistrate’s court has postponed the sentencing of a pasar malam trader, charged with abusing his girlfriend’s two-year-old daughter, to Sept 26.
Lower court registrar Muna Ma-ria Azmi fixed the date because the magistrate presiding over the case was attending a conference in Kelantan.
Muhamad Ferdaus Ahmed Jala-ludeen, 22, of Desa Permai, Sungai Dua, maintained his plea of guilty to a charge of physically and emo-tionally abusing the toddler.
He had admitted to abusing the girl at the Sri Wonder Flats, Jalan Lintang in Sungai Pinang at 8pm on April 18.
It was reported that the toddler was found by Civil Defence Depar-tment personnel with bruises and tied to the top of a refrigerator.
Under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, Muhamad Ferdaus could be fined up to RM20,000 or jailed up to 10 years or both.
Muhamad Ferdaus, who was unrepresented, is out on a RM2,500 bail.
