2007 04: Nearly raped at her college

The Star online. News. Nation. Thursday April 26, 2007

KUALA LUMPUR: An 18-year-old Tunku Abdul Rahman College (Ktar) student has alleged that she was almost raped by the person who was supposed to protect her – a security guard.

The victim, who is from Jinjang, claimed at a press conference organised by Federal Territory Gerakan division here yesterday that the guard grabbed a rock and hit her on the head at least 20 times and then dragged her to a slope near the lecture hall last Saturday.

She said, “It was 5.30pm and it was raining heavily. I was leaving the college after an examination and used the back entrance as it had a sheltered walkway leading to the main road.

“Near the exit, someone hit my head with a rock. When I turned around to defend myself, I saw that it was the security guard,” the girl said.

She said she tried to fight back but was overpowered by the guard who dragged her behind a lecture hall.

“He continued to hit me with the stone until I fell to the ground. He then started undressing me.
“After that he unzipped his pants and tried to rape me.

“I managed to push him away and ran for my life.”

Another security guard approached her and took the injured girl to the toilet to clean her wounds. She said the security guard then captured the suspect.

The girl said she called her parents who then took her to the Wangsa Maju police station where she lodged a report.

“I don’t want this to happen to anyone else especially my college mates. If I had brought an umbrella along, I would have used the front entrance and would have avoided him. Please carry a pepper spray, an umbrella or something for protection,” she said, explaining why she was relating her horrifying experience.

The victim’s father said he was unhappy that college officials had yet to visit his daughter. He said the college owed them an explanation.

“This is a very serious crime and my daughter could have been killed.”

In a statement, KTAR said that it had terminated the services of the security company that the suspect worked for and that it regretted what had happened to the victim.

“We will provide help and counselling to the student and her family,” it said.
City CID chief Senior Asst Comm II Ahmad Ibrahim said police are still investigating.

Ktar apologises to girl and family
The Star online. News. Nation. Saturday April 28, 2007

KUALA LUMPUR: Kolej Tunku Abdul Rahman (Ktar) has officially apologised to the student who claimed that she was nearly raped by a security guard last week.

College council member Datuk Ong Ka Chuan made the apology on behalf of Ktar over the incident at a press conference yesterday.

The MCA secretary-general said: “We are very concerned about the unfortunate incident and we apologise to the student and her family members for the trauma they are facing.

“We have terminated the services of the security company the suspect worked for.

“We will also take necessary measures to ensure that the security of the campus will not be compromised while we select and appoint another security company.”

College principal Yoong Lai Thye said it was necessary to appoint an independent security company to complement their in-house security team as they have only 18 guards to cater to the sprawling campus with some 20,000 students.

“We are constantly recruiting guards for our in-house security team but it is not an easy task. Meanwhile, we will scout for another security firm with good credentials and check its background before appointing it.”

In the incident, the 18-year-old student was leaving the college using a back entrance at 5.30pm last Saturday when the guard hit her head with a rock at least 20 times before dragging her to an alley behind a lecture hall.

“When I fell to the ground, he undressed me and tried to rape me. I managed to push him away and ran for my life,” she had said.

She was found by another security guard, who subsequently apprehended the suspect.

The student called her parents, who then took her to the Wangsa Maju police station to lodge a report.

After the report was filed, Yoong said college officials were there to offer support and assistance to the student and her parents but they declined, saying that there was no such need at that time.

‘Hire guards with care’

The Star online. News. Nation. Saturday April 28, 2007

COLLEGES should be extra careful when engaging security firms, Sin Chew Daily said in its editorial.

It said it was “frightening” that a security guard, whom people look to for safety, had attempted to rape a student.

Commenting on an incident where a Kolej Tunku Abdul Rahman student was nearly raped by her college’s security guard, the daily said yesterday that the incident attracted nationwide attention as the guard had attacked her in the college compound.

“To avoid a repeat of this episode, guards employed must be screened thoroughly,” said the daily, which suggested that the Education Ministry install closed-circuit television cameras for the safety of teachers and students.

Previously, parents did not need to worry about their children’s safety while they were at school but in recent years, many cases of robbery and kidnapping had been reported.

“School is no longer safe,” the newspaper noted.

All major Chinese dailies quoted Deputy Internal Security Minister Datuk Fu Ah Kiow as saying that the security company should be severely dealt with if it had failed to follow the proper procedures in employing guards.

Fu said Deputy Internal Security Minister Datuk Johari Baharom would initiate an investigation into the security company which employed the guard concerned, Sin Chew reported.
