2007 05: More jail time, caning for sex predator

AMPANG: The modus operandi for this sex predator was simple. He pretended to be lost, found a woman or schoolgirl who was nice enough to assist, and told them to get into his car to show the way.

Sometimes he posed as a police officer accusing them of drug possession. He would then whip out a knife, threaten them not to shout before raping or molesting them.

He was sentenced yesterday to five years' jail and two strokes of the rotan.Ismail Shah Abdul Wahab, 24, pleaded guilty at the magistrate's court here to abducting, molesting and robbing a 15-year-old girl while armed with a knife.

He took a gold chain, a pair of gold earrings, a bracelet and an anklet during the offence in front of Taman Cempaka LRT station at 4.30pm on July 19 last year.

He was sentenced to jail for 20 months, 24 months and 36 months for the three offences respectively, the sentences to run concurrently. The robbery offences also carried two strokes of the rotan.Facts of the case stated that Ismail Shah drew up in a jeep and introduced himself as a police officer to the girl as she was walking from the LRT station. While still seated, he invited her to get into the jeep, claiming that he needed help with directions. She escaped when he dropped her off at a restaurant to buy a drink and cigarettes.

Ismail Shah, who is married and a father of an infant, also pleaded guilty to two counts of abduction and molest involving a 12-year-old schoolgirl in AU 1/4A, Hulu Kelang, Ampang, at 2.15pm on July 14 last year.

He was sentenced to jail for 20 months and 24 months respectively, the sentences to run concurrently. This sentence will be served after the completion of the earlier sentence.At the Sessions Court, Ismail Shah pleaded guilty to two other charges of rape and forcing a 15-year-old girl to perform oral sex on him near a bush behind Sekolah Menengah Hulu Kelang, between 4.50pm and 6pm on Aug 19, 2004.

Sentencing has been postponed to Wednesday.In January, he was sentenced to 40 years' jail and 25 strokes of the rotan at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court for three counts of rape, three counts of unnatural sex and one count of unlawful confinement.

Serial rapist gets 166 years’ jail and 34 strokes

AMPANG: A husband, a father, an antiques salesman and now a convicted serial rapist and sex predator who is likely to spend the rest of his life behind bars.

Serial rapist’s reign of terror started in 2004.

Ismail Shah Abdul Wahab, 24, was sentenced to a total of 166 years in jail with 34 strokes of the rotan. The sentences, passed in three courts, both here and in Kuala Lumpur since January, are for 14 offences committed against six victims, most of them schoolgirls between the ages of 12 and 18. He is expected to serve at least 70 years at the Sungai Buloh prison.

Ismail Shah’s modus operandi was simple enough. Pretending to be a policeman, he would stop his victims to ask directions to the nearest mosques. He would invite his young victims to enter the car to make it easier for them to show the way and then take them on a terror ride before molesting and raping them.

At times, Ismail Shah would blackmail the girls. He would rummage through their schoolbags and produce small packets which he would claim to be drugs. He would tell his victims that they were in serious trouble with the law. He would then blackmail them into performing sexual acts to escape police action.

Among his favourite spots where he took his victims were his apartment, LRT stations, behind school compounds and even inside his Chevrolet Optra.

After he had finished with the victims, he would drive them to the nearest bus-stop but on several occasions the victims escaped after he stopped the car to get them to buy him a drink or cigarettes.

His reign of terror lasted two years from 2004. He was arrested several times and released on bail during which time he had raped and sodomised a 12-year-old girl at his apartment in Cheras.

Ismail Shah was arrested and when he was charged, his grandfather, who had posted bail of RM130,000 for an earlier charge, withdrew himself as the bailor. He had told the court that he did not want to have anything to do with the case nor his grandson any more.

Police investigations had earlier revealed that the victims had no reason to suspect him of any wrong doing as he has a pleasant appearance .

The fact that he introduced himself as a policeman and wanted directions to a mosque also helped to allay any fears the victims may have had.

At the Sessions court here yesterday, judge Noradidah Ahmad did not mince her words when she told him: "You should not be put back into society."You should be in jail much longer than that. The manner in which you posed as a policeman to prey on schoolgirls is inhumane."

Ismail Shah, from Taman Maluri, Cheras, did not show any emotion. His mother was in court but they did not speak to each other. She looked down as her son was led away.

He was convicted of seven charges at the KL Sessions Court in January, receiving a total of 76 years’ jail and 24 strokes of the rotan. On Monday, Ismail Shah was slapped with another 10 years’ jail at the magistrate’s court here for five charges of molest and robbery. And yesterday, he was sentenced to a total of 30 years’ jail and 10 strokes of the rotan for two other charges of rape and unnatural sex. Most of the jail terms are to run concurrently.

In Muar, a 19-year-old construction worker, who videotaped raping and forcing a minor to perform oral sex on him, was sentenced to 12 years’ jail and ordered to be caned six times.

Muhamad Azri Mustafa, of Kampong Sri Tanjung, Panchor, was charged with two counts of rape and forcing the girl, then 14 years old, to perform oral sex on him on two separate occasions last year at an oil palm estate.
