THE welfare of women and children will be a focus for Wanita MCA Selangor, with 16 out of 22 divisions agreeing to set up a special Women and Children Aid Unit in their premises.
“We are the first in the party to set up the units at such a big scale at state level,'' said Women, Family and Community Development Ministry parliamentary secretary Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun.
“We are treating it as a pilot project,” she said at the launch of the Counselling Training Programme organised by the Crisis Relief Squad of MCA (CRSM) and co-organised by Wanita MCA Selangor on Sunday. Chew is also National CRSM chairman.
She said this was also a way for Wanita MCA to further enhance its service to the public.

The Women and Children Aid Unit will essentially function as a bridge between those in need and relevant agencies.
“We are not counsellors, but we will help as far as our capacities allow it,'' said Chew. “Our role is that of a helper, to point the women and children to the right direction, and the training session is to teach members communication skills and the importance of a caring heart.
“We won't provide shelter, but we will try to arrange for shelter under the welfare department,” she added.
According to Chew, a designated room with standard settee and colour scheme will be set up in the divisions' premises.
“We want the rooms to be as warm and inviting as possible.” .
Members will undergo training to equip them in handling various cases, ranging from sexual harassment to violence, child abuse and more.
Wanita MCA Selangor has also engaged the assistance of Dr Leong Huey Mei of the KL Clinical Psychology and Counselling Centre Sdn Bhd to provide monthly consultations to members for a year.
Some 90 Wanita MCA Selangor and CRSM members attended Sunday's programme.
